Introducing DAX Video Course

This is an introductory video course about the DAX language. DAX is the native language of Power BI, Power Pivot for Excel, and SSAS Tabular models in Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services. The training is aimed at users of Power BI, Power Pivot for Excel, and at Analysis Services developers that want to move the first steps with DAX.

The goal is to teach the DAX language using Power BI for all the examples. You can download the initial Power BI Desktop file used in the demos and repeat all the steps shown in the videos. The same concepts can be used also on Power Pivot and on Analysis Services Tabular. The course is made of 150 minutes of lectures. You can watch the videos at anytime and the system will keep track of your advances. Within the course you can download the slides and the initial Power BI file used in the demos.

I have watched a number of video courses on DAX, many video tutorials, including SQLBI video tutorials, as well as read a big part of the DAX book written by Ferrari and Russo. For someone accustomed to thinking in SQL terms using DAX is very confusing at first, and following DAX courses does not help. In the DAX book continual references to "Pivot Table" and "Table" for example are not helpful for a SQL developer as the same terminology exists in SQL but refers to different concepts. This course is the first course I have watched that makes clear to me the meaning of Filter and Row contexts as well as the meaning of context transition in a manner that is unambiguous and also makes it easy for me to explain to others. For that reason I would have no hesitation in recommending this course to anyone wishing to learn PowerBI and DAX as their first stop. My only suggestion for improvement is that I wish the term "Pivot Table" were abandoned as, at least for me, it leads to confusion as to which object is being referred to, not so much in this particular course as the desktop shown in the video always makes it unambiguous which object is being referred to, but in general. I would prefer if "Report Table" or even if "Matrix" were used instead - in contrast to "Data Model Table".
