LATEST BI NEWS

What's happened in the last two weeks, with our comments:

• Get working days for any country in Power BI

This is a very complete and detailed example to get holidays for any country from timeanddate.com service. The service is not free, but the trial last three months. It deserves a test, just to get new and fresh ideas.

• Geolocate IP addresses
If you have a log of IP clients and you want to get their location, here is an example using a free service (which is subject to limitations depending on the workload). These are the kind of usages where the lack of incremental updates in Power BI is particularly painful.

• News for Analysis Services 2017
The Analysis Services “vNext” has finally a name: it will be Analysis Services 2017. Despite the non-news about the official name revealed, this version has finally object-level security, and not just table-level security (and this has a number of side effects). Another interesting feature is related to column and hierarchy reuse. As soon as these features settle down, we will investigate in some new articles.

• SQL Server Data Tools 17.0 released
The version of SSDT 17.0 is finally released and it is no longer marked as “not ready for production use”. This version is compatible with the DAX Editor, at least for models 1200 (not tested with 1400 yet). However, SSDT now has its own DAX Editor window, which is similar to the formula editor previously available in SSDT. It will improve, but now we have two names for the same thing. In any case, the DAX Editor extension is available only for Visual Studio 2015 and not for 2017. We live in a complex world.

• Backup and restore in Azure Analysis Services

You can finally backup your Analysis Services database on premises, and publish it on Azure Analysis Services. This long-awaited feature allows to process a model on-premises and then publish it on Azure, transferring a smaller set of data (compared to a full refresh). Just pay attention at security roles and dynamic security.
