Choosing tier in Azure Analysis Services

This article describes the differences in the tiers available in Azure Analysis Services (Azure AS), comparing them with the features in SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) on-premises.

Analyzing Data with Power BI and Power Pivot for Excel

How can you use Excel and Power BI to gain real insights into your information? How do you write a formula that provides the numbers you need? The answers to both of

these questions lie with the data model.
This book introduces the basic techniques for shaping data models in Excel and Power BI.

What's happened in the last two weeks, with our comments:

• Create report level measures in Power BI Desktop

The May release of Power BI Desktop introduced a long awaited feature: you can create a measure in the report when you have a live connection to Analysis Services or to another Power BI model.

You can have a model-only Power BI file published on Power BI service, and then create reports in other workbooks in Power BI desktop. For Analysis Services, only Tabular models are supported by now. We see many requests of enabling this feature for Multidimensional, but creating new DAX measures for a Multidimensional model requires a deep understanding of the data model, and we are not sure that a user will be able to do it safely even if/when such a feature will be available.

• New Power BI Premium licensing model
Large organizations wanted a licensing model less expensive than the standard pay-per-user model of Power BI Pro. The Power BI Premium licensing offers a capacity-based licensing cost that should be interesting for companies with hundreds or thousands of users. More details are available in the Microsoft Power BI Premium whitepaper. At the same time, the licensing for Power BI on-premises (now called Power BI Report Server) seems more complex than many people expected, and it seems expensive (SQL Server Enterprise will be not enough). Just the fact that we cannot provide a single link with a clear explanation in a few words is self-explanatory. Microsoft should clarify and simplify that.

• Power BI App and App Workspaces
The group workspaces and organizational content pack are now called App Workspaces and Power BI Apps, respectively. Beside the naming, the main difference is that now you no longer have an Office 365 group for each group workspace, even if you can still use Office 365 group’s OneDrive for Business to store files used as data sources. Our demo in the free Introducing Power BI book is still valid!

• Schedule pause/resume of Azure Analysis Services

You can optimize the billing of Analysis Services Azure and save money by running it only on business hours. These scripts show how to schedule the pause/resume of the service by using PowerShell.
