SELECTCOLUMNS – DAX Guide

SELECTCOLUMNS: Returns a table with selected columns from the table and new columns specified by the DAX expressions.

Hi there. Something irregular I’ve noticed is the following. See the following code based on DAX.DO:

EVALUATE
VAR BaseTable =
  ADDCOLUMNS ( ‘Product’, “@Products”, CALCULATE ( COUNTROWS ( ‘Product’ ) ) )
VAR Result =
  SELECTCOLUMNS (
    FILTER (
      BaseTable,
      ‘Product'[Product Name] = “Contoso Rechargeable Battery E100 Black”
    ),
    [@Products]
  )
RETURN
  Result

You can create a Column using ADDCOLUMNS, in this case [@Products]

Then if you want to return the already computed value in another SELECTCOLUMNS statement, I try to filter down the table to a single row. Then selectcolumns should return the Value underlying [@products].

However, when writing this it gets underlined with a red line and the message: “Parameter is not the correct type.” However, the result still works. I’m wondering if I wrote something with a syntax error, which causes the code to be underlined.

ps. The picture I added uses a ‘Contract’ table for my own model, but it shows a similar issue.

It’s a known bug. Can you please open a ticket with Microsoft asking to fix it? The more we ask for it, the more they might consider to fix it.

GOAL: ALIAS a summarized column ( ‘Fact'[BucketGroup])
Note: Not showing all the other variables doing filter to lessen complexity
If I run and evaluate __DS0Core the data is correct. RunTime on 100 MillionRows 1 sec.
However I have to ALIAS a column.

VAR __DS0Core =
    SUMMARIZECOLUMNS(
      ‘dimCustomer'[CustName],
      ‘Fact'[BucketGroup],
      __DS0FilterTable,
      __DS0FilterTable2,
      __DS0FilterTable3,
      __ValueFilterDM0,

      “Total_Orders”, ‘Fact'[Orders]
    )
EVALUATE
  __DS0Core

I have tried several methods but SELECTCOLUMNS should work in theory as I am just selecting the output from table generated by __DS0Core.
The Order Total is now incorrect. I can’t even tell what it is totaling
This seems overcomplex to Alias a column.

Also Note I have tried wrapping ADDCOLUMNS to change the name. Takes hours and not correct.
Also note when you copy the DAX from POWERBI, any columns RENAMED in POWERBI are not retained in the DAX
